PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The rehabilitation of 1917 era building, recognized as one of San Francisco's most important historic structures, includes modifying the interiors to serve its new use while preserving the historical features of the 165,000-square-foot facility. The New Asian Art Museum houses more than 12,000 objects spanning 6,000 years of history and over forty Asian countries, making it the largest collection of Asian art outside Asia. The library's collection is made up of more than 27,000 monograph titles (30,000 volumes) and 205 serial titles. The collection's value presently exceeds $4 billion, which is the single largest asset other than real estate within the City and County of San Francisco.  Museum-grade environmental controls are being added to a building with no central air conditioning. A base-isolation seismic system is also being provided. An addition is also included that will house a 400-seat theater as well several back-of-house museum functions.
